Limit Search by Jurisdiction

  • In the box to the right of the search box and to the left of the orange "Search" button, click on the small downward arrow to reveal a large box entitled “Jurisdiction.” The default jurisdiction is "All State & Federal." To limit jurisdiction to New York, check the box next to "New York" and uncheck "All Federal," along with any other boxes that have been checked.  After jurisdiction has been selected, click "Save."

Limit Search to Cases Only

  • After limiting jurisdiction and running a search as set forth above, click "Cases" in the left navigation pane of the search results screen. This will limit search results to cases only (by default, cases will be the first category of results returned). To further narrow results to cases from a specific court, scroll down to the "NARROW" section of the left navigation pane, then click on the plus sign next to "New York" (located under the "Jurisdiction" heading). Then check the box(es) next to the applicable court(s) and click "Apply Filters."
  • Alternatively, to run a direct search of cases only, start at the "Browse All Content" home screen, click on Cases, then click "New York" under "Cases by State." Click "All New York State Cases" to search all cases from New York State courts, or click on the applicable court to search for cases from that court only.

Limit Search by Topic

  • After limiting jurisdiction as set forth above, click "Cases" in the "Browse All Content" home screen, then scroll down to "Cases by Topic" and click “Insurance Law”.

Key Numbers

  • After limiting jurisdiction, running a search, and further limiting results to "Cases" as set forth above, scroll down to the "NARROW" section of the left navigation pane, then click "Select" next to the words "Key Number."  This will open a separate "Key Number" box displaying all applicable key numbers.  To narrow results by key number, click the word "Add" next to the applicable Key Number(s), then click "Apply Filters".
  • The topic "Insurance" is found at Key Number 217.

Limit Search by Jurisdiction

  • In the middle tab below the main red search box (which by default reads "All Jurisdictions") click on the downward arrow. This will open a pop-up window with a list of available jurisdictions.  Check the box next to "New York" for New York State, or click alternate jurisdictions as applicable.
  • Alternatively, run a search using the main red search box, then click "New York" under "Jurisdiction" in the "Narrow by..." left navigation pane.  If "New York" is not immediately available, click "More" to expand the selection option.  To choose multiple jurisdictions, click "Select multiple."

Limit Search to Cases Only

  • In the left tab below the main red search box (which by default reads "All Content Types") click on the downward arrow. This will open a pop-up window with a list of available content types.  Check the box next to "Cases" to limit search results to case law.
  • Alternatively, run a search using the main red search box, then click on the "Cases" heading in the grey toolbar below the red search box to narrow the results to cases.
  • To further limit results to cases from a specific court, after running a search, scroll down to the "Source" heading in the "Narrow by..." left navigation pane, then click on the name of the applicable court.

Limit Search by Topic

  • In the right tab below the main red search box (which by default reads "All Practice Areas & Topics") click on the downward arrow. This will open a pop-up window with a list of available practice areas and topics. Check the box next to "Insurance Law" to limit the search to results related to insurance law.
